Mt. Burdell Nature Walk
Saturday, April 15
11:00 - 1 or 2 p.m. (depending on how much we stop and talk and how long we take for lunch). Bring your own lunch and water.
What would you do if you had a spectacular park almost in your own back yard? Ask fellow PBKNCA members to pack a lunch and join you for a nature walk on Marin County Open Space’s Mt. Burdell in Novato, of course.
This will be an approximately 3 1/2 mile loop trail around a vernal pool - mostly on fire roads, but some single track sections. There is some uphill at the beginning of the hike (good students always attack worst assignments first!), but it is mostly downhill after that. Because of the copious rains this year, we might have to cross some seasonal streams, so be prepared with waterproof hiking boots and a sturdy walking stick
On the hike, we should see many wildflowers - among them blue-eyed grass, brodiaea, mallow, buttercups, cream cups, mules ears, poppies, and whatever else the experts among us can identify. Birders might sight lazuli buntings, lark sparrows, house wrens, red tailed hawks, and turkey vultures. In addition to enjoying Mt. Burdell’s several different species of oaks, we will encounter “bouncy trees” and an acorn granary tree. Those interested in agriculture might meet cows who use the open space this time of year as pasture, but move out of our way with a bit of encouragement.
Meet at 11:00 a.m. at Jean James’ house, 8 San Ardo Ct., Novato, where you can use the facilities both before and after the hike. (No water or restrooms are available on the trail.)
