How To Apply For A Scholarship - Submit Your Application To Your Campus Coordinator. Do Not Contact The Northern California Association.

CANDIDATE INFORMATION SHEET
FOR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANTS*

Thank you for your interest in applying for a Phi Beta Kappa Graduate Scholarship. Last year, our organization made awards to twelve outstanding graduate students in the amount of $10,000 each. We encourage you to review the information below and to apply to your local campus coordinator. Please be sure to check the application deadline at your campus.

The PBKNCA scholarship awards program begins in November. Check with your campus representative for the deadline. Any graduate student who is a member of PBK and is enrolled in graduate studies in one of the following Northern California schools may apply:

  • San Francisco State University
  • Santa Clara University
  • Stanford University
  • UC Berkeley
  • UC Davis
  • UC San Francisco
  • UC Santa Cruz
  • University of the Pacific

1. Students who wish to apply can obtain the current contact name looking for their school in the Chapter Directory of the National site

2. The materials to be submitted by candidates are set forth on the ApplicationForPhiBetaKappaGraduateScholarship.pdf

3. Please review these carefully before submitting your application to your campus coordinator. Do not contact the Northern California Association. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must have been elected to Phi Beta Kappa by a chapter in the United States.
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate or professional program in Northern California.
  • A student who has previously been awarded a PBKNCA scholarship is ineligible.

Selection Criteria

The following will be considered by the Scholarship Committee in its review:\

1. Using no more than 600 words, describe to your teenage self what you do and why it is important. Use language that your teenage self would have understood then (perhaps use a simile). Explain how your project breaks new ground in your field. Explain how your findings might be useful outside your field.

2. Provide a short excerpt (maximum 600 words) as a writing sample. This can be from the proposed dissertation or a published article.

3. Explain what caused you to choose your research area. Describe your personal and professional objectives.

4. List honors and awards. 

5. List published works, if any. (Abstracts of up to two published works, not to exceed one paragraph each, may be included.)

6. Include three sealed, confidential letters of recommendation, at least one of which must have been written in the past six months.

7. Include any other information you think pertinent.

Complete application packets must include this application form and all the materials detailed above. Incomplete application packets will not be considered.
