The Winchester Mystery House is a mansion that once belonged to Sarah Winchester, whose father in law founded the Winchester Repeating Arms Company (the maker of the Winchester rifle). Sarah first occupied the residence in 1886. Motivated by an interest in Victorian architecture and interior design, she remodeled the original 8-room farmhouse as a passion project.
Several legends surround the Winchester House. It served as the inspiration for The Haunted Mansion at Disney Parks and filming took place on the property for the 2018 film Winchester staring Helen Mirren.
Today the house covers, 24,000 square feet, 10,000 windows, 2,000 doors, 160 rooms, 52 skylights, 47 stairways and fireplaces, 17 chimneys, 13 bathrooms and 6 kitchens. The 60-minute tour will take us through 110 of the mansion’s rooms.
After the tour, admission includes access to the gardens. Visitors can also opt to purchase the optional additional basement and attic tour for $20.38. Café 13 is also available on site for breakfast, lunch, snacks, and drinks.
Please be advised, the tour is not ADA accessible; the tour will take guests through 4 flights of stairs and half a mile of walking.
