Not only were we able to honor our impressive Scholarship and Teaching Excellence winners, we also had the opportunity to socialize with both old and new friends in a lovely setting. And as an added bonus, we were able to “do good,” while having a good time. By hosting our event there, we directly supported the mission of the Fresh Starts Culinary Academy at Homeward Bound. This program provides hands-on training, experience, and job placement opportunities for individuals working to transform their futures. Rebels With La Causa: Rebels With La Causa offers an artistic survey of the range of aesthetics embodied by the RCAF as well as their mastery of screen-printing techniques and experimentation within graphic arts overall. The joining of bicultural (Mexican and American) aesthetics, iconography, and strategic incorporation of subversive humor refuted definitions of Chicana/o art as solely political, ‘ethnic,’ or folk art. The exhibition highlights 95 posters created for the myriad artistic, cultural, and spiritual activities organized by the larger RCAF collective from 1970–1990. It also features photographs, ephemera, and videos related to the collective’s artistic production, community engagement, and political activism. The exhibition explores the creative production and expansive output of the RCAF, one of the Chicano Movement’s most prolific and impactful artist collectives. It highlights the posters created for the myriad artistic and cultural activities and spiritual ceremonies. This vibrant exhibit explores the expansive production and creative impact of the Royal Chicano Air Force (RCAF), one of the Chicano Movement’s most prolific and impactful artist collectives. Beginning in 1970 at Sacramento State University, the group produced individual artworks and group murals, as well as posters for educational, cultural, and political activities. The RCAF’s transformation into a broader collective not only initiated an explosion of Chicano art exhibitions, literary events, performances, and community celebrations, but expanded civic and political engagement. While RCAF posters served as announcements for these wide-ranging activities, their multicultural aesthetics, subject matter, and strategic humor redefined Chicana/o art, as well as the history of art and activism in the United States. Charles Schulz’s cartoon strip has graced newspaper pages since 1950, and he became the most renowned – and well-known — cartoonist of our time. We will explore the museum devoted to the creator of the artist behind Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts Gang. Schulz’s humor was at times observational, wry, sarcastic, nostalgic, bittersweet, silly, and melancholy, with occasional flights of fancy. When Schulz announced his retirement in December 1999, the Peanuts comic strip was syndicated in over 2,600 newspapers worldwide, with book collections translated in over 25 languages, animated film specials, and musical accompaniments. The museum is filled with memorabilia, comic strips, Schulz’s re-created studio, and much more. And it is a lot of fun!

There is an ongoing virtual book club open to interested members.
The Northern California PBK Association book club has set their book reading slate for the next year or so and would like to welcome any new members who would like to join.We meet every 6 weeks or so by Zoom with the hosting duties rotating depending on who has chosen that meeting's book. We read a mixture of fiction, non-fiction, memoir, and mysteries.
